Leading UK outdoor clothing and equipment firm GO Outdoors has named Chris Matthews as its new chief executive.
The appointment follows GO Outdoors’ founder and current chief executive John Graham’s announcement last year that he was to step down from that role and concentrate on other functions within the business.
Mr Matthews joins Sheffield-based GO Outdoors from Dixons Retail, where he has worked in senior positions in general management, commercial, e-commerce and marketing roles over the last 10 years.
He is currently managing director of Greece’s leading electrical retailer Kotsovolos, which has 103 stores and a market-leading web and mail order sales business. Prior to joining Dixons he worker for Marks and Spencer.
John Graham said: “We knew that we wanted a CEO who was a talented retailer, but even more importantly we wanted someone who understood GO. Chris is that person.”
GO Outdoors chairman Colin Holmes said: “GO Outdoors has a really strong management team who have achieved a tremendous amount in the last year. I am confident that Chris will be a great addition to the board, and will help create an even better business for customers, staff and suppliers.”
GO Outdoors has been expanding rapidly at a time when competitors in the outdoor clothing and equipment sector have faced difficulties.
The company recently announced turnover had risen by 19 per cent to a record £203 million after doubling the number of people it employs and it is poised to open its 42nd store next month. Mr Matthews’ appointment is the latest in a series of top appointments at the company, which is based near Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane ground.
