INCOME tax has been cut for 188,000 Sheffield residents in a policy spearheaded by Hallam MP Nick Clegg.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said the reduction, worth £600 per year per person, is part of a staged move to raise the personal tax free allowance to £10,000.
The target, one of the key policies fought for by the Liberal Democrats in government, will be achieved in April next year with a further cut in personal taxes.
Sheffield Hallam MP Mr Clegg said: “This is real help for ordinary people in difficult times. It is evidence of how, in the Coalition, the Liberal Democrat priority is to create a fairer society and a stronger economy, enabling everyone to get on in life. It is thanks to Liberal Democrats that 24m basic rate taxpayers had an income tax cut on April 6.”
