Major schemes announcement

Government announcements are expected at the end of the month on two major transport schemes in South Yorkshire.

The proposed route and station in Sheffield for the planned high-speed rail network and a trial of new tram-trains linking Sheffield and Rotherham using Supertram tracks are both awaiting a decision.

There is currently a campaign in Sheffield, headed by Liberal Democrat Sheffield Council members and Wicker traders, for the high-speed rail station to be built at the old Victoria Station site on the Wicker Arches.

Meanwhile the UK’s first tram-trains are proposed to run on a trial basis from Parkgate shopping centre, through Rotherham to Meadowhall, on existing rail tracks before switching to the Supertram line to run into Sheffield city centre.
