Meadowhall Shopping Centre has become one of the first retail destinations in the world to offer ‘virtual gift cards,’ redeemable in more than 250 centre shops using a mobile phone or tablet device.
The initiative is part of a pioneering project with StoreFinancial, the Kansas-based international payment systems and prepaid card programmes specialist.
It comes at the same time as a surge in shoppers using Meadowhall’s free Wi-Fi service and news that more than two out of five people who use its website do so with a mobile device.
Meadowhall’s Mark Bruce said: “For the first time ever our customers will be able to remotely purchase cards and pay for products at a wide range of retailers using their mobile devices.
“Mobile Commerce - or M-commerce - is becoming an important area for retail and we are excited to be the very first of our kind to open the doors to an exciting future of wireless and mobile enabled payment options.”
