‘London firms will come to Sheffield’ says council boss

Have your say

The leader of Sheffield Council is backing the city centre as the best location for HS2’s station – and not its current planned site at Meadowhall shopping centre – because it will create 6,000 more jobs.

Speaking at the launch of the HS2 Growth Taskforce Report, Coun Julie Dore said: “What this report does is move away from high-speed. It is about high-speed but it’s much more than that. It’s about integrating, connecting not just London to Sheffield, but Leeds to Sheffield and Manchester to Leeds.

“There are professional services who want to move out of London, where it’s expensive to live and to commute. It’s about quality of life as well.

“There will be growth from these industries in Sheffield. They will relocate to a city centre site, not a parkway location. That’s why the evidence shows the town centre will create an extra 6,000 jobs.”
