American Pie Limousines offered their services to Gleadless Valley foodbank on Friday, driving essential packages to those in need in a white Rolls Royce.

Simon Hayward, company manager, said: "We knew people were struggling more than usual and wanted to help. We have the means to transport food parcels to the vulnerable and needy and they have the need for those food parcels while staying safe at home, isolating.

“We are happy that we can help in this way and hope that seeing one of our fleet of Rolls Royce pull up outside their home with a bundle of food will bring not just relief, but a happy smile and some cheer to all.”

Inside the bags were things such as tinned goods, bread, soap, milk, sanitary towels, toilet roll, pasta and rice.

Councillor Paul Turpin, Green Party representative for Gleadless Valley ward, also went along to help out.

He said: "The people of Gleadless Valley have borne more than their fair share of the problems brought by austerity. These problems have been exponentially increased by the Covid-19 crisis.

“We have recently expanded the Gleadless Valley foodbank but many of the volunteers are vulnerable themselves so this has caused extra problems in providing the needy with food on a weekly basis. Being able to reach people by delivering their life saving food parcels to their door is a game changer.”

Jock Stevenson, of Gleadless Valley foodbank, said: “We are eternally grateful to American Pie Limousines for doing this but we need help in other forms too.

"Getting the food has become even harder since the places that collect food for us have closed, not to mention people panic buying. We have a shortage of nappies, long-life milk and toilet roll that we are struggling to find."

It can accept donations - at a safe distance - of food and essential supplies every weekday from 10am until 12pm at the site on Blackstock Road.

People can also donate money which the team use to buy supplies via their website gleadlessvalley.foodbank.org.uk/give-help/donate-money
