Lidl reignites interest in giant Sheffield city centre supermarket after two-year lull
The company wants new cladding and windows on the derelict building
Lidl has signalled renewed interest in a giant new supermarket in Sheffield city centre.
The German discounter has applied to install new cladding, windows and solar panels on the former Office Outlet store at 200 Eyre Street.

A supporting letter states: “The existing building is somewhat dated in appearance and it is considered that the proposal will help modernise and upgrade the elevations of the building.”
It is the first update since 2024, when Lidl put hoardings around the site, which faces Decathlon and backs on to the Moorfoot office building.

Lidl originally planned to build a new store on the site, at Mary’s Gate Retail Park on Eyre Street, but pulled the planning application in October 2023.
At the time, it said it was withdrawing the application so it could update its supermarket plans.

The plan was opposed by the Sheaf and Porter Rivers Trust which lambasted Lidl for a ‘complete failure to acknowledge’ the Porter Brook which runs under the car park.
The plan was also criticised for being a stone’s throw from an Aldi.
Lidl has a supermarket at 50 High Street in the city centre.
