City lawyer Petra Papinniemi is heading off to Africa as part of an initiative to bring overseas legal and commercial expertise to the University Law School of Tanzania, in the country’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.
Petra, an associate at DLA Piper’s Sheffield office, will join senior lawyers from around the world to deliver lectures and interactive workshops to more than 170 law graduates.
The two-week programme also involves DLA Piper clients, advanced technology, services and finance company GE and bankers Barclays and is aimed at the next generation of Tanzanian lawyers, who could represent government and business in the future.
Petra said: “I lived in Tanzania 20 years ago so from a personal perspective, I’m really pleased to have the opportunity to return and get involved with such a great project.
“The Tanzania Project is a valuable initiative and the benefits it brings to the lives of the students shouldn’t be underestimated.
“This education will not only help to shape their futures but it positions the students to better contribute to the future of Africa on the world stage.”
