Kostal seeing hike in profits

AES Engineering, Energy Alloys and Kostal UK are the stars among the Rotherham companies in this year’s Star Business Barber Harrison & Platt Top 100 rankings.

Mechanical seal manufacturer AES Engineering, which trades as AESSEAL, has consistently been at the top of the table of Rotherham’s most profitable companies.

Energy Alloys, the Catcliffe company that is a subsidiary of US-based Energy Alloys, a global supplier of metals, semi-finished products and services to companies manufacturing for the oil and gas industry and service companies, almost doubled its profits to rise one place.

Meanwhile, after seeing profits slump last year, automotive electrical systems specialist Kostal UK boosted profits from £127,000 in 2012 to £3.1 million – the first time that profits have risen above the £1 million mark since the company joined the Top 100 in 2006, when it was making losses.

The success means the company has now risen from seventh to fifth in the table of Rotherham’s most profitable companies.

MTL Group, the contract manufacturing specialist that supplies the defence, renewable energy, offshore oil and gas, construction, quarrying, rail and recycling industries, has also succeeded in breaking the £1 million profit barrier, after making losses last year.

MTL started out as a family business 18 years ago, specialising in contract laser cutting and bending metal plate to make components for construction and quarrying equipment.

The company grew from nothing to a workforce of around 130 people, generating sales of £17 million a year in 10 years, at which time the family decided to sell the business and realise its investment.

Following a Management Buy In Buy Out in 2006, led by former Ford and JCB executive Dr Henry Shirman, the company has grown even faster.

Nowadays, the company employs around 350 people and has sales totalling around £50 million.
