Earning a deserved place in esteemed foodies’ bible The Good Food Guide wasn’t enough to keep one of the city’s best-loved restaurants going.
Kitchen, left, on Ecclesall Road was recommended in the guide last year. It won the Editor’s Award for best value for money.
But last week a sign appeared in the window saying ‘closed until further notice due to serious electrical fault’. And within days, word was out that the eaterie had closed for good.
Barnsley wine expert Mark Sutton, who confirmed the bad news to The Star yesterday, launched the restaurant on the back of successful food events at the Food And Fine Wine shop and deli he runs next door with former Harrods wine manager Adrian Walsh.
The two teamed up with chef John Parsons as third co-director, but John left in August to build up his outside catering company Feed The People and stage pop-up supper clubs in Hathersage. Mark said: “We are sad about it but in this economic climate it has been too difficult to sustain business.”
