A QUESTION mark hangs over 50 local jobs after a South Yorkshire-based steelwork fabrication company went into administration.

The business is balcony and architectural steelwork specialist JGP Engineering, based at Mitchells Industrial Park, Wombwell, Barnsley. It supplies balconies for main contractors including Bam Construct, GB Building Solutions, Shepherd Homes and Inspace.

JGP was established in 1997 and had grown to become one of the largest suppliers of balconies in the UK. It offers balconies, balustrades, staircases, gates, canopies and other structured steelwork.

The company had expanded due to the huge growth of modern city centre flats developments across the country.

Managing director, Gary Phillis, declined to comment about the decision to call in administrators.

Simon Plant, at London-based SFP Group, is handling the administration.

A spokeswoman for the firm said the administrators were hoping to sell the business.

JGP Engineering is the latest firm to be hit by problems in the housing market, which caused developers of several apartment projects in Sheffield to go to the wall, notably City Lofts.

Its tower was completed by the firm’s creditors.
