Increased passenger satisfaction on buses

Passenger satisfaction with public transport in South Yorkshire has increased over the past year.

The largest rise in satisfaction is with bus passengers - which officials believe is partly down to ‘improved’ services in Sheffield due to a new partnership between operators and transport officials.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive carried out a survey of passengers on buses, trams and trains.

Bus users who said they were satisfied with the service provided overall rose by seven per cent on 2012 levels, to 63 per cent.

Satisfaction with frequency has gone up five per cent to 64 per cent, and those able to get a seat when they get on a bus has risen six per cent to 83 per cent.

The satisfaction survey was sent to 6,000 households in South Yorkshire.

David Young, SYPTE’s deputy interim director general, said: “These figures show the improvements we are making to the network are making a real difference to the quality of people’s journeys.

“Across a whole range of measures, from the speed of journey to the quality of information and the helpfulness of the driver, passengers are telling us they are noticing a real improvement.

“That is really good news and something we will look to continue and build upon.”

Sheffield’s Bus Partnership Agreement, in which operators work with the council and transport officials to plan the network and fares, has been shortlisted for awards after boosting passenger numbers.

The scheme, which has led to a 5.8 per cent rise in passenger numbers, is in the running for the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Annual Awards and three honours in the National Transport Awards 2013.
