Hundreds of people have turned out to the funeral of a war veteran today after an appeal in The Star.
George Thompson fought bravely for his country in the Second World War - but passed away with no family members and few surviving friends.
The Star joined forces with the Royal Air Force Association and urged people to attend the 96-year-old’s funeral to give him the send-off he deserved.
People from around the country have helped to spread the word.
Several hundred people turned out to the funeral, which took place this afternoon at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium, Abbey Lane.
George’s coffin was draped in an RAF standard.
There were so many mourners, many had to stand outside and listen to the service.
