All DIY stores have been closed for the last month due to the coronavirus lockdown, but were still allowed to trade under the Government’s essential business regulations.

B&Q was the first to reopen last week, with the move leading to big queues as people sought to use the lockdown to complete home improvement projects and gardening tasks.

Now Homebase have followed suit, with the firm’s managers keen to trial the opening of 20 stores first, before hopefully rolling out the programme to more of their UK bases.

Homebase chief executive Damian McGloughlin said: "With the safety of our customers and teams as our first priority, we took the decision to temporarily close our stores and operate online only.

"We have taken this time to carefully review and make a large number of changes to our operations in preparation for a safe, phased reopening, in line with Government guidance on social distancing."

The firm had been operating a click and collect service from its stores throughout the lockdown, but many customers reportedly encountered problems with the website.

Their remaining UK stores not opening this weekend will continue to offer a collection and counter service as before.
