Government Minister praises ‘brilliant work’ of Barnsley food waste resale firm

Mr Opperman’s visit focused on the Company Shop Group’s work to prevent good food and products from needlessly going to waste.
The group purchases surplus food stocks to sell in its 10 members-only stores.

Hide AdThat provides people working in the NHS, emergency services, social care and the food supply chain with access to high-quality, low-cost food up to 50% off the normal retail price.
The Minister for Pensions and Financial Inclusion said: “It was a real pleasure to visit the Company Shop Group and see the brilliant work they are doing, delivering local jobs alongside environmental and social benefits.
“As we build back better after the coronavirus pandemic, it is important that we do so in a sustainable way. Company Shop’s model is an excellent example of this, and I applaud the work they do across the country.”
The minister and Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Miriam Cates met the Company Shop team to learn more about its pioneering work to support the retail and manufacturing industry and its success in using surplus redistribution as a sustainable asset for business, a benefit for the planet and a force for good in the communities it serves.

Hide AdThe guests were given a tour of the Wentworth store and logistics operation.
The visit followed what the group described as an extraordinary few months. It has scaled up its provision to provide more support to the food, drink and hospitality industry, key workers and to communities most in need as a result of coronavirus.
Miriam Cates said: “To deliver this impact in such an environmentally friendly and sustainable way is especially commendable and provides a really positive, innovative example for other businesses.”
Steph McGinty, the firm’s retail, people and communities director, said: “It was a pleasure to host the minister and Miriam Cates MP at our headquarters here in Barnsley and we were pleased to be able to show them first-hand the vital work that the group does to support the industry, key workers and communities.”
