Fresh hope for Sheffield’s famous Full Monty working men’s club

Two Sheffield community groups have come forward in a bid to save Shiregreen Working Men’s Club.

Sheffield council gave a temporary reprieve from the bulldozers in February, after more than 1,000 people signed a petition to save the club that played a starring role in the 1997 hit film.

Now Sheffield councillor Peter Price has given new hope that the building may be saved.

He said: “The owner has been in discussions with two separate groups, St Vincent’s Amateur Boxing Club and a Community Arts group for some sort of building share.”

The club which closed in 2018, was saved after Ann Bentley and her husband Roy, steward and stewardess of the pub for 15 years and during the time the Full Monty was filmed, started the petition.

In a council meeting in February, Ann Bentley said: “When the club closed, the club had a healthy bank balance. I feel if this club was saved and run by professional qualified people this would bring back to the community and beyond, their social life that was taken away when the club closed.”

In February, Coun Price warned the community that it was only a “stay of execution” and that they had one month to come up with a long-term plan.

On Twitter, Mr Price said: “Permission to demolish was given, we had no powers to prevent it. However, the owner is in discussions with two groups looking

for alternatives.”

St Vincent’s Amateur Boxing Club has been approached for comment.
