THE soaring value of precious metals has prompted the city’s 238-year-old hallmarking office to launch a public valuation service.
The Sheffield Assay Office, one of four remaining assay offices in the UK, will value jewellery, watches and silverware at valuation days at its office on Beulah Road, Hillsborough and at jewellers. The first is on December 1.
Ashley Carson, the Assay Master, said: “The sharp rise in the price of precious metals has meant that an item which was valued at £6,000 a couple of years ago may be worth closer to £10,000 today. The item may well be under-insured.”
