The Health and Safety Executive is urging trades people and maintenance workers to take up the offer of free online asbestos awareness training courses.
The courses are free until the end of November thanks to a partnership between the HSE and the asbestos training industry.
Paul Spurrier, HSE head of operations in Yorkshire and Humber, said: “More than 3,200 people in Yorkshire and the Humber died from asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma between 2000 and 2009. The death toll will continue if tradespeople and building maintenance workers who come across it in their jobs don’t protect themselves.
“I’m urging workers in the industry to take advantage of this offer. Spending a few hours in front of a computer could literally save your life.”
