Four students head to US nuclear lab on paid internships

Four Sheffield University students have been selected to work and study at one of North America's most advanced small modular reactor test facilities.

The engineering undergraduates will work at nuclear technology developer NuScale’s base in Corvallis, Oregon, from June to September on its fully-funded internship programme. They are: Jagoda Cieslik, Albert Houghton, David Mansley and Mark Morrow.

NuScale’s team of more than 600 is working on technology for small nuclear rectors that can be transported by truck and linked together. Backed by the US Department of Energy and Fluor Corporation, NuScale is due to submit its design certification application to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission this year and to be generating electricity for its first customer in 2024.

NuScale has been building a presence in the UK - including at the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in Rotherham - for the past three years with a view to selling SMRs here and in Europe.

Managing director UK and Europe Tom Mundy said: “Opening up our world class test facilities to Britain’s future nuclear engineers is an important part of the enduring partnership NuScale is forging with the UK energy sector.

“With our design application being finalised for the regulator this year, these selected students will be contributing to our programme development activities in Corvallis at a crucial moment in our journey to bring this exciting new technology to market.”
