Outstanding business of the year, Robson Handling Technology, is flying high thanks to demand for its baggage handling systems from regional airports.

The Darnall company, which also won awards for excellence in manufacturing and customer service at the Sheffield Business Awards is expecting orders for its baggage handling and screening systems to reach £3 million in the first quarter of the year.

Increased security at airports, prompted by heightened fears of terrorist attacks, has fuelled demand for Robson’s integrated hold baggage screening systems.

Robson works with a number of screening system manufacturers worldwide to create handling systems that X-ray luggage from different angles and identify suspect or illegal items in a split second by comparing their shape and density with information in a database, so that the flow of luggage to the aircraft isn’t delayed.

Robson designs and manufactures the system to suit each airport layout, using a 3D computer simulation which allows the engineers to integrate the screening system into an airports existing baggage system.

Since the start of the year the Coleford Road company has won orders from Belfast, Jersey, Bournemouth, Birmingham, Cardiff, Southend and Aberdeen airports. Robson’s airport business development manager, Julian Martin, attributes the company’s success to its commitment to quality.
