The shopping centre's joint owner British Land has refined plans for the new leisure hall after a round of public consultation earlier this year. The firm will put the plans on show for a final time before submitting a full planning application before Christmas.

The 330,000 sq ft extension will include new restaurants, a state-of-the-art cinema, a gym and bowling alley - all covered by a huge lattice glass roof. There will also be an open-air roof terrace.

Including construction, the project will create about 2,000 jobs in the region.

Meadowhall centre director Darren Pearce said: “The reception to the leisure hall proposals has been very positive. Our customers and existing retailers alike recognise that Meadowhall needs to modernise to stay fit for the 21st century, and they are excited about what we are proposing.

"The leisure hall will add something different to what Meadowhall currently provides, creating even more choice for our visitors. The scale and nature of the extension will also reaffirm Meadowhall’s position as a great asset for the Sheffield city region, alongside a city centre that is also growing in strength.

“The extension means more jobs and, like the £60 million refurbishment that is currently underway, will provide opportunities for local companies to play a part in Meadowhall’s future.”

Following June's consultation events, the company has refined the scheme over the summer, looking at sustainability and landscaping.

Accessibility and parking will also be improved. British Land plans to install high-tech electronic signs to show which car parks have spaces, electric car charging points, pedestrian walkways, cycle parking and a cycle lane linking through to Meadowhall Way.

A new multi-storey car park means no parking spaces will be lost as a result of the extension.

The new cinema will have solar panels on its roof to reduce carbon emissions and these will be a source for at least 10 per cent of the leisure hall’s energy consumption.

If the proposals are approved, British Land hopes to start work on site during 2018 and open the leisure hall in late 2020 or early 2021.

The plans will be on display at Meadowhall from 11am to 7pm on October 7 and at the Millennium Gallery on from 11am to 7pm on October 10. Visit www.futuremeadowhall.co.uk.
