Small businesses have added their voice to concerns about the future of the M1 Tinsley Viaduct.
The Federation of Small Businesses says securing the future of the ‘vital’ structure should take precedence over building the HS2 high speed rail network.
Sheffield Council and Sheffield South East MP Clive Betts say plans must be developed as soon as possible for the 45-year-old viaduct’s eventual replacement.
Otherwise, they argue, construction of a neighbouring viaduct for HS2 could make replacement difficult or impossible.
Gordon Millward, regional chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses in South Yorkshire, said: “Calls for the Government to consider replacing the viaduct cause us to question its long-term viability.
“Surely securing this vital north-south road link must take precedence over the construction of the HS2 vanity project.
“One dreads to consider what would be the economic and social ramifications if the viaduct – and therefore the M1 – were to be unusable.”
