Businesses are being urged to sign up to a new initiative which aims to promote a culture of fairer employment practices in the workplace.
The Fair Employer Charter has been developed by Sheffield fencing manufacturer Gripple, the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Our Fair City campaign to encourage businesses in the city to adopt fairer employment practices.
Described as the first business-led initiative of its kind, the scheme will be launched at Gripple Ltd’s headquarters in The Old West Gun Works, Savile Street East, on Friday, January 22, between 11am and 1pm.
More than 25 organisations have already signed up for it and other businesses are urged to attend to find out more.
A spokesman for the initiative said: “Sheffield is committed to becoming the fairest city in the country, which is why business leaders in Sheffield have developed the exciting Fair Employer Charter.
“Local employers are joining together in recognition that championing fairness is important for the city and is also central to recruiting and retaining the most talented individuals and clients, contributing to the best type of economic growth.
“Those signing up to the Charter pledge to instil a positive working culture, provide excellent working conditions, and aspire to exceed the recognised living wage. Unlike fair employment charters in other towns, Sheffield’s Fair Employer Charter has been developed by businesses for businesses.”
A number of individuals in positions of power have already agreed to be the faces of the campaign, including Julie Dore, leader of Sheffield City Council.
