Heartbroken owners pull plug on Sheffield's Extra Life Gaming Lounge in face of rising operating costs
A Sheffield gaming cafe where customers play retro consoles and arcade cabinets is closing down.
Extra Life Gaming Lounge, on Commercial Street, announced it will hold its final day on May 30 in the face of rising operating costs and a ”noticeable decline in footfall.”

“It is with a heavy heart that we share some important news,” wrote owners Mike Penman and partner Rachael in Facebook post on April 5.
“Over the past 12 months, we’ve faced a significant rise in operating costs alongside a noticeable decline in footfall and spending.
“Despite our best efforts, these challenges have made it impossible for us to continue, and we’ve had to make the incredibly difficult decision to close.”
The video game cafe, which holds a 4.8 star rating on Google Reviews, was met with an outpouring of support from customers online.
The post continues: “We want to take a moment to say a huge thank you to every single person who has walked through our doors over the past seven years. Your support, laughter, and passion have meant everything to us.
“Over the next two months, we’re determined to go out on a high — celebrating everything Extra Life has been with you all, right up to one final, unforgettable Members Night [May 30].”
Extra Life declined to comment on the upcoming closure when contacted by The Star.
The cafe is planning to sell its collection of retro items, consoles and equipment “to help cover the final costs of closing down,” and asked buyers to contact them directly.
One emotional fan, Kellsey Brown, wrote: “Devastated, honestly got tears in my eyes. It's so awful to see another small local business closing down, let alone it being one of our favourite places to visit.
“We've spent every birthday here the last few years. We'll miss the games, the friendly atmosphere, the amazing food and drink (particularly the handmade coleslaw!) but especially you both.”
