Exporters fear effect of debts

Fear of not getting paid has become the key barrier to exporting, according to a survey of companies in Yorkshire and the North East.

More than one in five companies say not getting paid is the biggest risk, but, despite that, well over a quarter of the region’s non-exporters are confident their products and services would sell abroad.

More than two out of five firms taking part in the survey saw Asia and emerging markets as attractive options for exporting.

Aidene Walsh, head of UK global transaction services at RBS, said: “Despite economic uncertainty, businesses are still hungry to trade overseas and 65 per cent of them feel it is vital to economic recovery.”
