Age UK Sheffield has announced payouts in the region of nearly £1 million from energy giant E.ON for local eligible customers on special energy tariffs.

Funded by E.ON, some £950,000 worth of payments – which are in addition to the Government’s Cold Weather Payment – have been designed to offer some financial relief to those in later life who struggle to pay their water, gas and heating bills.

The payout is to be made to electricity and gas customers on Age UK tariffs which launched in September 2012.

They include Winter Rewards of £10 for customers aged over 60, or £20 for customers over 80.

Charlotte Davenport, from Age UK Sheffield, said some old folk might have struggled to stay warm during the long cold winter.

She said: “This past winter was prolonged and harsh. Naturally it would have raised the concerns of those in later life about the cost of keeping warm in winter.

“That’s why, with the support of E.ON, qualifying Age UK Energy customers are given further help through Cold Weather or Winter Payments on top of the Government’s payment to offer them a little extra support.

“This year, our Age UK energy customers will receive an extra payout totalling over £950,000.”
