Electric Steelmakers’ Guild bring first meeting of 2024 to Sheffield

Delegates from across the UK were in Sheffield for the first 2024 meeting of the Electric Steelmakers’ Guild.

The conference was held at the city’s Marcegaglia site near Meadowhall and hosted representatives from England, Wales and Scotland, including Harsco, Liberty Steel, Tata Steel, Celsa Steel and Marcegaglia - Stainless.

Special guest speakers included Lee Birkbeck of Steelphalt’s Rotherham plant, Craig Taylor of Heraeus, Richard Curry of Sustain and Alan Scholes of MPI.

“The aim of the Electric Steelmakers’ Guild is to promote progress in the manufacture of steel for commercial purposes and to encourage free discussion and exchange of information of mutual interest and benefit to members,” said Guild Vice President Carl Brown, who is also Harsco Environmental General Manager in Rotherham.

“Our membership represents international leaders in the electric arc furnace sector and this first meeting of 2024 brought some exciting and interesting ideas to the table.

“Our focus is the development of green steel techniques and helping the industry to meet its emissions targets.

“As vice president of ESMG - and as president next year - I believe that we can be leaders in the development of a sustainable and environmentally responsible industry.

“This first meeting of 2024 was well attended and full of great ideas for increasing our presence and influence in the industry.”
