Doncaster rail commuters were stranded in Conisbrough for an hour on Tuesday - after their train ran out of fuel.
The 18.26 service from Doncaster to Sheffield shuddered to a standstill and passengers had to wait for another train to tow them the rest of the way.
Other services between Doncaster and Sheffield were suspended as a result.
One passenger said: “I couldn’t believe it when we were told we’d run out of fuel. But the staff worked hard to get us up and running again and I think they were just as disgruntled as us.”
A Northern Rail spokesman said: “All our trains are checked regularly by our fleet management team who monitor their mileage carefully and ensure they are correctly fuelled for service.
“This train had been sent to a fuelling depot in Cleethorpes over the weekend to be refilled.
“Unfortunately, the train was not refuelled as requested and we’ll be working with our fuelling depot to find out why. We’d like to apologise to any customers who experienced disruption or delays.”
