Demolition progress at The Moor

Demolition contractor Cuddy is gearing up to start the next phase of demolition, paving the way for the revitalisation of The Moor.

The company's 16 man demolition team is on target to complete the removal of 40 separate buildings by early 2008 to make way for a new market hall and student accommodation.

Around 20,000 tonnes of rubble will have been removed from the site by the time demolition is complete, with 99 per cent of the material, including timber, being recycled.

So much of the interior of the buildings has been recycled that only five skipfuls of waste material have been created. The next step will involve excavating foundations uncovered by the demolition.

Demolition director Paul Geary, who heads up Cuddy's northern office in Worksop, says it could take six weeks to remove the foundations.

"It's fantastic to be involved in such an exciting, high-profile project," said Mr Geary.

"It's going to be very interesting to see the various stages of the project unfold. We have also discovered foundations of older buildings beneath and what looks like an old road, which local archaeologists are keen to look at."

Mr Geary praised site manager Lee Jones and his workforce for minimising the noise, dust and disturbance created by the demolition, which started almost a year ago.

"It's a very tight site close to main roads and other public buildings, so we are working hard to keep noise and dust disturbance to a minimum for businesses and members of the public.

"The team is doing a sterling job in continuously hosing the site to keep dust levels down, and is working hard coordinating the works to minimise traffic and pedestrian disturbance," he said.
