Double Olympic Gold Medallist Dame Kelly Holmes will be the guest speaker at a conference in Sheffield, designed to encourage businesses to capitalise on opportunities stemming from global sporting events.

The event, at Sheffield United Football Club on Thursday, January 19, will also hear from local event management company SportWorks about its success in winning a contract to work for the International Sport Shooting Federation World Cup in the run up to the 2012 Olympics.

The ISSF World Cup is part of the London Prepares series of events which is being used as the official sports testing programme in the build-up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A number of the presentations will target companies interested in developing business on the back of sporting opportunities in Russia and Brazil through partnering, joint ventures and having a local presence.

SportWorks’ Tom Wenham said: “We’re travelling to Brazil in February with UKTI (UK Trade and Investment) to get a feel for what it’s all about.

“We’ve also signed up for the Passport To Export programme to establish contacts with potential Brazilian business partners, undertake a communications review, develop our international strategy and benefit from the direct support of an expert trade advisor.

“It’s far from being a case of turning our back on the UK, but there are a number of opportunities overseas and we need to be in the best possible shape to take advantage of them. It promises to be an exciting period ahead.”

In addition to Dame Kelly Holmes and Tom Wenham, speakers will include UKTI regional director Mark Robson and members of his team, as well as Yorkshire Gold Business Club manager Lauren Pigg, .
