Radio controlled helicopter specialist Fast Lad Performance is aiming to reach new heights with the backing of bankers HSBC.
The Barnsley business, founded in 2006 by radio control helicopter enthusiasts Jamie Renwick and Chris Walton, buys and supplies model helicopters, parts and related products worldwide.
Most of the Dodworth-based firm’s business is done via its website - www.fast-lad.co.uk - and the company has customers across the globe, including in China and the US, where it is among the top five suppliers.
Fast Lad approached HSBC for funding after an Italian helicopter supplier offered it the chance to steal a march on the competition.
The opportunity came after Fast Lad carried out a six month trial of a new line of helicopters with its clients.
The helicopters proved extremely popular and, because Fast Lad was a leader in its marketplace, the Italians offered the firm the opportunity to buy the new line in advance of its competitors.
HSBC’s deputy area commercial director for South Yorkshire, Mark Tompkinson, said: “We are thrilled to be able to help a business that is so well established in its field to further increase its customer base in Europe and the US.
“As Fast Lad Performance primarily trades online, it has been able to take advantage of the rapid growth in consumers using online shopping facilities and it’s by capitalising on these opportunities that Fast Lad has grown to having the fifth biggest share of the US market.
“We are excited to be supporting the future plans for such a strong British business.”
Fast Lad director Jamie Renwick said: “As an internationally expanding company, we try to always identify the most sought after stock lines to try and secure future sales growth.
“Our importing and exporting activities with China, Europe and the US means we need a bank that has the international credentials to support us.
“We feel HSBC’s international expertise makes it the perfect fit and we’re looking forward to working with them as we continue to grow our business.”
