Beanies Wholefoods, on the corner of Crookesmoor Road and Barber Road, has been running a collection and delivery service of its popular veg boxes after taking the decision to close its premises to the public just after lockdown was imposed in March.

But on Saturday, June 13, the shop will be returning with social distancing measures in place. Opening hours will be 10am to 4pm, from Tuesday to Thursday and at weekends, and 10am to 8pm on Friday. On Mondays the shop will remain shut, with only customer collections offered.

“We will be keeping a watching eye on government guidance and how this works for our business,” Beanies said in a message to customers.

“Customer numbers will be limited to a maximum of five in the shop at any one time. Customers should please consider shopping alone to allow others to use the shop.”

People should wash their hands on arrival, Beanies added, and use hand sanitiser. A one-way system will be in operation inside and customers are also urged not to ‘pick up or touch produce or items unnecessarily’.

“Customers waiting outside will stand two metres apart from one another – clearly demarcated and safe in the car park. Customers to pay by card only in the shop if possible.

“We will increase our cleaning of high contact areas in the shop such as counters and door handles. Shopping baskets will be cleaned after each use.”

And Beanies reminded customers to wash their fruit and veg before eating. “This is as important as ever.”

The shop – run as a co-operative – was established more than 30 years ago and moved to its current site, 100 yards up the hill from its former home, in 2019. This allowed co-op members to add more floor space, bike racks and a small car park, an expanded bulk buy section, and a cafe next door.

Its stock includes organic and non-organic fruit and vegetables, and locally-baked bread.
