England’s second national lockdown, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, is scheduled to end on December 2 and has forced people to do most of their Christmas shopping online.

Chocolate maker at, and owner of, Bullion Craft Chocolate, Max Scotford, is urging people in Sheffield to shop local where possible and has put together a directory on the firm’s website, linking to some of the city’s best food and drink makers.

"It’s an opportunity to showcase the incredible food and drink producers in Sheffield...And buying a bottle of craft beer or coffee or bread from your favourite retailer when putting together a Christmas hamper might not just help us to survive – it might help us to thrive,” said Max who set up Bullion Craft Chocolate, Yorkshire’s first bean-to-bar chocolate company, in 2016.

Among the 31 Sheffield businesses included on the directory are The Sheffield Honey Company, Depot Bakery, Locksley Distillery, Foundry Coffee and Truffle Pig Vegan.

Other food and drink producers who would like to be added to the directory are urged to get in touch with Bullion.

Max said small businesses such as his normally rely on Christmas markets and the boost to trade throughout the festive period; but feels “grateful” to see so many people making a conscious effort to shop local this Christmas.

"It’s difficult to put into words how difficult it’s been this year, whether you’re a food and drink producer or not,” said Max, adding that every bit of support, whether that is by shopping with a small business or by simply spreading the word, really helps.

Max trained as a chef at Sheffield City College and found chocolate to be a “stand out” ingredient while he was training.

This led him to look into how it was made, and decided to start Bullion Chocolate, joining a handful of companies in the country who produce chocolate from bean-to-bar using small-batch techniques.

Since then, the firm’s products have since been stocked in Harvey Nichols, were featured in style bible Vogue and have won prizes at the Academy of Chocolate Awards.

Bullion Chocolate is now based in Cutlery Works, where, outside of lockdown, members of the public can have a factory tour or visit the café.
