Everyone was keen to get their first pints in after a four month Covid hiatus. Children were keen to get to the playing area and even the dogs were straining at the leash.

The entry to the pub is via the new new side entrance where manager Kurt Woods was busy greeting and seating customers.

He said: “It’s been great so far this morning we’ve been very busy. People have been socially distancing themselves and it’s good to see everyone again.

"The weather has been fantastic so far.”

First in the queue was Graham Royle, boss of Sheffield chemical firm GRI Group, out with a group of five friends and colleagues. They were doubling up on the beers to ensure seamless drinking.

He said: “We’ve been here since 10.30 making sure we get out table. We were thinking of camping out to be honest. We have been on our computers at home having team meetings every Friday so we can still talk and catch up, drinking beer in our own homes and having a curry delivered. So to get out and actually experience life again normally and have a decent pint as well is fantastic. Plus this is draught beer and not out of a bottle.”

John Wright said: “It’s absolutely wonderful. I’ve been waiting for it for so long.

"It feels like everybody in the country has booked tomorrow off.”

The top car park of the pub is now kitted out with three large gazebos and benches with room for 150.

The covered area has overhead heating if the weather is chilly.

Downing his first pint of many, Rowan Roberts said: “I’ve been looking forward to this for ages five long months withering away. I’ve been gasping for six months – it’s like cloud nine. It’s been so good to get out with my friends and socialise with them again. We’ve got lucky with the weather.”

Stag regular Jon Martlew said: “It’s been long overdue. Already this morning I’ve been for a swim and had my beard trimmed so apparently I need to go into a non-essential shop and I’ve got the full card in the April 12 bingo.”
