Sheffield pubs and restaurants could be allowed to reopen under the new three-tier lockdown system, which the Prime Minister is expected to announce today.

The city is expected to be placed under the strictest restrictions under the new lockdown levels, after South Yorkshire was moved into ‘level three’ of the previous system which prevented households from mixing indoors and in most outdoor settings such as private gardens.

What businesses can reopen?

Under tier two of the brand new lockdown system, pubs and restaurants which serve ‘substantial meals’ will be allowed to reopen, however pubs in areas placed in the highest level will have to stay closed except for takeaway services.

Premises which did not provide food were prevented from selling alcohol and forced to shut under tier three of the old system.

The 10pm curfew rule is also set to be changed, with pubs and restaurants allowed to stay open until 11pm under the new rules.

The idea behind the plans is to ensure customers make their last orders at 10pm, giving people more time to finish their food and drink before the premises are forced to close.

Customers will still have to stay within their households while visiting pubs and restaurants.

Will non-essential shops be allowed to welcome back customers?

It is still not yet clear which businesses will be allowed to reopen under the new, regional rules but the ban on outdoor grassroots sport is set to be lifted in all areas, despite differing restrictions.

Under the old lockdown system which was introduced across England in October, local authority leaders gave advice on whether businesses such as casinos or gyms should be closed in the areas under the highest restrictions.

However this could change following the new rules, as non-essential business and gyms are anticipated to be allowed to welcome customers in all areas.

Cities under tier-three will also receive mandatory mass testing – in an attempt by the government to slow the spread of the virus by testing people who are deemed asymptomatic.
