Shops, restaurants, hotels and ‘central plaza’ planned to be built near Doncaster Sheffield Airport
Plans have been unveiled for a massive development of shops, offices, hotels, a supermarket and a new ‘high street’ close to Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
The project, named GatewayEast Central Plaza, will be located just west of the main airport terminal off Great Yorkshire Way in Auckley.
The proposed development site covers 30.92 acres and could include four restaurants, a pub, coffee shop, three hotels and potentially a mix of shops, apartments and/or offices.
Applicants Peel say the development will provide 1,162 full-time jobs and result in an increase in Gross Value Added (GVA) of £249 million per year.
A new open square plaza-type area will be also created on site as part of a ‘high street’.
The central area of the plaza is intended to provide ‘outdoor seating areas, attractive views and adequate, accessible and safe pedestrian and cycle links to the wider area’.
At the intersection of the high street and the central area will be a public area with the provision for ‘pavilion style’ cafe/restaurant to dine in or out.
Plans were submitted in December and due to the scale of the development, it is likely councillors will decide on the proposals at a meeting later this year.
A spokesman for architects Fletcher Rae (UK) Limited, said: “The proposed development comprises: up to 42,689 square metres of high quality, mixed use premises including business, leisure and residential development in a highly accessible location adjacent to Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
“This is a high quality external environment which will contribute to the setting of the proposed development, softening and screening hard infrastructure, creating a sense of place and enhancing legibility for pedestrians and motorists.
“New cycleway and pedestrian connections will connect the local people with these new job opportunities, retail, leisure, commercial and residential space, amenities and facilities.
“The high quality architecture and landscape design to create an exemplar high quality mixed use development.
“Overall, the Gateway East Central Plaza development will create a highly active, quality and sustainable development central to the overall wider DSA master plan.
“The parameter plans facilitate a people focused environment creating a well considered, new and exciting place. This includes high grade public realm and supporting infrastructures which connects sensitively to the surrounding and wider context.”
