The Sheffield branch of the Campaign for Real Ale was set to hold the 46th edition of the Steel City Beer & Cider Festival at Kelham Island Museum in October.

But, despite the easing of some lockdown measures, those behind the event believe rules to prevent the spread of Covid-19 will still make a festival unviable later in 2020.

“It is with great regret that we are cancelling this year’s festival,” said organiser Paul Crofts.

“Obviously we were looking forward to staging another great festival, but with the current social distancing measures looking set to continue for some time, it became obvious that we couldn’t ensure the safety of our visitors and still retain the atmosphere that makes it such a special event.

“Rest assured we are already looking forward to 2021 and in fact have two events planned. The National CAMRA Members’ Weekend and AGM takes place at Sheffield City Hall from April 16 to 18, and of course the next Steel City Beer & Cider Festival from October 14 to 17.”

Paul added: “We anticipate that restrictions will be lifted sufficiently by then for these events to be a fantastic celebration of real ale and Sheffield’s role in its continuing success.

“In the meantime, we encourage everyone to support our local breweries and pubs with their home delivery and off-licence schemes. We are fortunate to have some of the best in the country and I’m sure we all want them to still be here when things return to normal. Stay safe and we hope to see you around in 2021.”

The annual event normally showcases hundreds of varieties of craft beers, ciders and perries, alongside street food vendors, traditional pub games, live music and more. A donation is made to a chosen charity.

CAMRA members from across Britain will gather in Sheffield next April for the AGM and to explore the city’s pubs. A members’ bar – likened to a mini beer festival – will be set up in the City Hall ballroom.
