Head distiller Paul, who also helps run The Commercial Inn, says the decision to become an online-retailer was made before the Covid-19 outbreak.

But, with the pub closed due to the current restrictions, he has been able to focus solely on the distillery – and customers can’t get enough.

“It wasn’t necessarily relative to the Covid-19 outbreak but we finally managed to get our website up and running just around a week before it all kicked off,” Paul said.

“Since then we’ve had a lot of new uptake, we must be one of the companies that have seen a benefit to the outbreak because we seem to be getting more and more people finding out about us and buying products from us.

“It’s been mad. I had a look at our figures compared to pre-pandemic sales, business has increased over twice the amount from what it was before, close to three times.”

Sheffield Distillery has the permission of the Sheffield Assay Master to use the 'Assay' name and Sheffield Assay Mark on every bottle of its spirits.

The firm sources the majority of its ingredients within the South Yorkshire region and has its own London Dry gin, a St Clements gin – made with seven botanicals, clementine peel, liquorice and juniper – and a liquorice gin.

Vodka is also made onsite in Chapeltown, with a strawberry and black pepper flavour and a roasted rhubarb flavour among those produced.

Paul is currently busy distilling, bottling and delivering the spirits to customers within Sheffield, but is happy to drive further afield if necessary to Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster.
