The Sheffield café that serves Arctic Monkeys’ favourite sausage rolls has reopened

The Grind was launched in 2010 by Howard and Amanda Wade in Kelham Island on the ground floor of Cornwall Works, a former silversmiths. The glass-fronted venue on Green Lane has a casual atmosphere, offering a menu of specials and colourful salads as well as high-quality cakes and coffee.

The café’s meaty sausage rolls, meanwhile, are so beloved that Arctic Monkeys ordered a vast quantity of them for their homecoming gig at the Don Valley Bowl in 2011.

In June Howard and Amanda said they would not be reopening the business themselves – but now they have brought the café back after all.

"We just decided for the good of Kelham Island and for the good of the staff it was better to be open than closed,” Howard told The Star.

"Unfortunately lots of businesses have got an uncertain future ahead of them so we don’t know what’s going to be round the corner, but we thought it better that it should be open than sitting there empty.

"We've not just opened it to sell it, or anything like that. We’ve opened it because it’s the correct thing to do at this particular stage. We still own it, we've done a bit of work on the place and our intention is to trade on.”

The Grind’s reopening weekend was ‘busy’, he said, adding that the café is taking part in the Government-backed Eat Out To Help Out scheme which gives diners half-price food and soft drinks on selected days throughout August.

Bookings are being taken but customers can still drop in or order items to take away, and there is outside seating too.

"We’ve always had a drinks licence but we’ve never really pushed that, so we might push that a little bit,” said Howard – who confirmed The Grind’s sausage rolls are firmly on the menu.

"It’s business as usual – as usual as business can be.”
