The popular Picture House Social, based at the landmark Abbelydale Picture House, has operated there for seven years and applied for the change of licence before Covid-19 struck last year.

James O’Hara, of Bar Public Ltd that own it, said they applied for the extra opening time following requests from customers.

He added: “Not only are we custodians of that building but we are part of the community and have been for quite a while.

“You’d be hard pressed to find a single complaint across the whole business.

“That’s because we are owners of responsible venues, we always adhere to the rules and work with the council and whoever we need to in order to retain safe premises, that’s something we are really passionate about and will continue to do.”

The capacity of the site is 120 people with an average clientele of people aged between late 20s and late 30s.

Sheffield Council’s sub licensing committee made the decision following a meeting this week.

There was one objection from a member of the public who raised concerns about noise and parking.

But Mr O’Hara said they had taken steps to mitigate this and have not had a noise complaint in Picture House Social’s near decade-long history.

He added it was unlikely to set a precedent for similar venues in the area as the building is unique in that it is in the basement and therefore emits less noise onto the street.
