More than 900 pubs could close when South Yorkshire goes into Tier Three lockdown on Saturday, shock new figures show.

Up to 939 pubs and 14 wine bars will close unless they can operate as restaurants offering ‘substantial meals’ under new measures for ‘very high’ alert areas.

Some 142 betting shops and three casinos will also be forced to shut, according to analysis by real estate adviser Altus Group,

In Sheffield, 402 pubs, nine wine bars, three casinos and 56 betting shops are affected.

Tier Three is the highest level of government restrictions to combat the virus and come into force in Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster, first thing on Saturday morning.

Robert Hayton, head of property tax at Altus Group, said government support for firms during the first lockdown had now largely been spent.

He added: “Pubs need a targeted support package, not just those mandated to close, as well as given assurances that the package will be in place for the foreseeable future.”

Business premises with a rateable value of £15,000 or under will receive grants of £1,334 per month whilst those with a rateable value of more than £15,000 and less than £51,000 will receive grants of £2,000 per month.

Larger business premises, those with a rateable value of £51,000 or over, will receive grants of £3,000 per month.

The Government will also support businesses by paying two thirds of each employees’ salary, up to a maximum of £2,100 a month.
