The firm has announced that from today, all restaurants will only be open for drive thru and delivery only – with branches closed to dine-in and walk-in customers.

This means that all Sheffield branches without a drive-thru will close to customers, providing only delivery services.

This includes the city centre restaurant on High Street.

CEO Paul Pomroy said: “Throughout this crisis we have always prioritised the safety of our employees and customers.

"And so, in light of the recent announcements from the government and public health authorities, we have decided to temporarily change the ways in which we will be operating in the UK and Ireland.”

From today, restaurants will be open for Drive-thru and McDelivery only.

Click and Serve through the My McDonald’s app will also be available at many drive-thru restaurants, enabling customers to order in advance and have your order safely brought to your car window in a numbered bay.

He added: “Our restaurants are unique, and we want to take some time to review the set up at each restaurant before we offer takeaway during these latest restrictions. Therefore, we have voluntarily decided to introduce this temporary change whilst we work with third party experts to review and verify any additional enhanced safety measures for our walk-in takeaway services. We will continually review this decision and will only re-open for takeaway with third party verification of any additional enhanced safety measures.

“Please be assured that the measures implemented back in May will continue to be in place to help keep you and our employees safe.

These measures include:

Protective screens in kitchen and service areas;

-Smaller teams to enable social distancing;

Face coverings and daily temperature checks for all employees;

Hand and bag sanitising stations and face coverings for McDelivery couriers

Enhanced cleaning of all surfaces and touchpoints.

He added: “This is not the start of the year any of us had wanted and I know these changes will mean some customers are unable to visit, but we must all continue to play our part in supporting the national effort to get through this pandemic."
