Here’s what rubbish you can take during an ‘essential trip’ to Sheffield's waste recycling centres

According to Sheffield Council, an essential visit may be needed where residents are unable to store the waste safely at home for a sustained period.

This could include waste that is causing an accessibility, fire or safety issue, or waste which may attract vermin.

Residents with ‘significant’ significant volumes of DIY waste and garden waste are asked to consider contacting a registered skip hire company.

Green bin garden waste collections are now operating as normal after being suspended for two weeks.

Due to the impact of the coronavirus on staffing levels, residents are warned that some collections may still be affected with black bin and clinical waste collections being prioritised.

Veolia – which manages rubbish for Sheffield Council – says that the city’s waste recycling centres will only remain open if residents ‘behave responsibly’.

They are, however, unable to accommodate as many visits as usual and are limiting the number of people at each site to ensure safe social distancing.

“It is not acceptable for customers to queue in vehicles outside the sites. This may cause potential danger for other road users trying to pass,” a Veolia spokesperson said.

New Public Health regulations mean that the Police have additional powers to ensure people stay at home and avoid non-essential travel.

The additional powers mean that the police can instruct people to go home, leave an area or disperse, issue a fixed penalty notice of £60, which will be lowered to £30 if paid within 14 days, or issue a fixed penalty notice of £120 for second time offenders, which will double on each further repeat offence.

At Longley Avenue West Recycling Centre, in Shirecliffe, and Beighton Road Recycling Centre, in Woodhouse, a maximum of six vehicles are allowed at any one time.

Blackstock Road Recycling Centre, in Gleadless, will allow a maximum of eight vehicles, while at both Machester Road Recycling Centre, in Deepcar, and Greaves Lane Recycling Centre, in High Green, the maximum number of vehicles is four.
