From roast dinners to birthday cakes - study reveals what human foods Sheffield people feed their pets

Research of Sheffield’s animal owners has revealed the extent to which desperate owners resort to feeding fussy pets human food.

The study, by pet food brand Webbox Naturals, found as many as (77 percent) of British pet owners say they have a picky pooch or a fussy feline.

In Sheffield alone, as many as (23 percent) agree that their pet is pickier than their kids when it comes to what is served up at mealtimes, with (47 percent) saying they worry that their pet isn’t eating enough.

The study also found that a whopping (60 percent) of Sheffield pet owners regularly let their animals eat food from their own plate, with (27 percent) often letting their pets lick their plates clean.

The latest research also confirmed that more than a quarter of Sheffield’s locals (30 percent) are feeding their pets chips, while another (13 percent) have even fed them pizza.

An additional (7 percent) have gone as far as feeding their furry friend birthday cake, while nearly a third of fussy felines and hounds in the area have happily gobbled up some bacon.

Another (30 percent) have fed their cat or dog ice cream, while as many as (30 percent) of Sheffield’s pets incredibly sit down to a full roast dinner with all the trimmings.

Spaghetti bolognese (7 percent), crisps (23 percent), sausages (30 percent), steak (33 percent) and mash (17 percent) are also among the list of human foods Sheffield locals regularly feed our furry friends, according to the data.

Yet more than a quarter (27 percent) of Sheffield’s pet owners claim they always like to serve their furry friend the very best food that money can buy, while (10 percent) of people claim to spend more cash on pet food than on grub for themselves and their family.

The dedication of Sheffield’s pet owners doesn’t stop there as a further (7 percent) of respondents in Sheffield have done a late night supermarket run to buy food they know their pet will eat, and (30 percent) routinely hide edible treats around the house so their cat or dog will go and hunt them out.

TV Vet, Paul Manktelow, said: “While feeding a small amount of appropriate human foods to pets can be OK, it’s important to remember what they can have and what they should never be given.

“There is really no substitute for a proper diet based on nutritional species appropriate food which has all the right vitamins and minerals for your pet.”

Webbox Naturals pet recipe consultant, Camille Ashforth, said: “It’s great to see from the research just how dedicated the nation’s pet owners are in terms of feeding their pets quality food.

“That said, we are confident even the fussiest of pets will enjoy our yummy range which has been carefully developed using high quality ingredients which are also kind to sensitive tummies.

“We’ve included a number of new humanised recipes which performed very well during extensive, independent taste testing - such as Lamb and Chicken with Sweet Potato, Peas and Mint.”
