Family-run Sheffield business keeps delivering the goods during coronavirus lockdown

GW Price, established in 1902, is a wholesale business that normally supplies hotels, schools and hospitals with fresh produce. But like many organisations, they have been hit hard by lockdown measures.

Still, the enterprising spirit that has kept them going for four generations continues to thrive alongside some good will during a testing period.

They have begun offering delivery services across Yorkshire and Derbyshire completely free of charge. Customers can have fresh produce and dry goods delivered to their door, saving them a potentially risky trip to the supermarket.

“There’s no minimum order and we did 1,000 trips last week,” said Richard Plant from the company.

“It really has taken off, we’ve have been called heroes and everything.”

Around 15 drivers are still working for the firm, which usually employs 62 people. The remaining staff members have been placed on the Government’s furlough scheme.

Richard said: “All my men are at risk but we are all doing our bit to keep a two-metre rule and be as professional as possible with deliveries.

“We have been going for 120 years, we have just had to adapt to the situation. We started with a horse and cart and now we’ve got 50 vans.”
