Drive-thru plans ditched for high profile site near Crystal Peaks - this is the new plan for Sheffield site

Artists’ impression shows how former Damons site could look under alternative plans

Plans for a drive-thru restaurant at a high profile site near Crystal Peaks look set to be ditched, with new plans drawn up.

The drive-thru had been included in a masterplan which would have seen land which was once the large car cark at the once popular Damon’s restaurant, near Eckington Way and Sevenairs Road, Waterthorpe, Sheffield.

But the developers behind the scheme have now revealed that they had not been able to find anyone prepared to operate the drive-thru part of the plans.

Developer Jaguar Estates now wants to transform that part of the site into a car garage and MOT test centre, with artists’ impressions showing how it would look as a Formula One Autocentre.

A design and access statement drawn up for the scheme by AAD architects explains the firm was appointed by the owners of the land, which was formerly used as Damons’ car park, to redevelop the site to form new buildings providing a range of uses in 2020.

It states: “This scheme was submitted and approved by Sheffield City Council, and progress is being made on site. However, the drive-thru element of that scheme has proved impossible to let. This new application seeks to replace the drive-thru with a B2 Auto Centre including Ministry of Transport Test Centre with associated landscaping and car and cycle parking.

“The development will make use of a site which is currently demolished and formed of levelled crushed brick and being fenced off from public access.

“The proposals will respect and enhance the surrounding existing built environment and landscape as provided by the previously approved scheme. The site has unique character which will be preserved and enhanced and will be provided with a greatly improved environment.”

A full planning application had been submitted in 2021, which would have seen the demolition of the turning circle, with the construction of two buildings to form a drive-thru, a hot food takeaway and a nursery school, as well as the extension of the existing car parking provision and landscaping works.

Damons closed in 2019, after nearly 30 years.

It was redeveloped to become a Wetherspoons pub - The Scarsdale Hundred.
