“Another one rides the bus”

Fuel prices have crept up to a 2026 high - and drivers in Sheffield are feeling it.

The government says the average UK retail 'pump' price this week was 164.4p per litre - the highest average price this year.

The lowest price nationally was 131.46p per litre on February 9.

Prices rose in March when the US attacked Iran, reaching an average of 148.78p per litre.

They surged again in July and August due to disruption of oil cargo tankers through the Strait of Hormuz - and have continued to rise.

In Sheffield this morning, Sainsbury’s at Crystal Peaks had petrol at 157.9p per litre and 176.9 per litre for diesel. Morrisons in Ecclesfield was selling petrol at 159.9p per litre and diesel at 181p.

At Texaco on Birley Road, Birley, petrol was 166.9p per litre and diesel was 186.9p per litre.

At the Welcome Break service station on the M1 at Catcliffe, petrol was 189.9p and diesel was a whopping 209.9p.

On The Star’s Facebook page readers discussed the impact the prices are having on their lives.

Misterbit Valeting indicated making cutbacks elsewhere.

“£126 last night to fill my Renault Trafic. Then people ask why I can't wash a car for a tenner,” he said.

Peter Mcgregor pointed out the difference in prices.

“Even more worried about the price of diesel! Once about 5p more than petrol now 20p+. Why?” he asked.

Rob Flatters has a strategy to avoid prices hikes.

“It’s not gone up, it’s still £30 when I put £30 in the tank,” he said.

Steve Martin added: “It’s a finite resource and will invariably go up. Trump’s senseless war doesn’t help.”
