A popular cafe in Sheffield has announced it won’t be reopening, after failing to agree a new deal with its landlord.

Gerties Cafe on South Road in Walkley had been running for eight years but had not welcomed customers back since lockdown restrictions were eased, allowing pubs, cafes and restaurants to reopen, on July 4.

Announcing that it is closing for good, the business said: “Our lease came up and we couldn’t come to an agreement with the landlord on a sensible rent.”

It claimed that negotiations had started with a 40 per cent increase in rent – something the landlord has since denied, saying he offered to freeze the rent – and the risks were ‘too high’.

The owners added: “We would like to thank our customers for their loyalty and support over the last eight years. You’ve provided jobs to both staff and suppliers in the local economy, which is important for our city.”
