Cineworld – which has a cinema in Sheffield – is reportedly set to temporarily close all its 128 sites in the UK and Ireland, putting an estimated 5,500 jobs at risk.

According to the Sunday Times, Cineworld chiefs have blamed the decision – which is expected to be a temporary measure until next year – on the postponement of big budget films in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

Reports say the move could be confirmed in the coming week.

The company has a multiplex cinema at Valley Centertainment on Broughton Lane, Sheffield.

The head of the UK Cinema Association said he feared the Cineworld closure was ‘indicative of challenges faced by the entire UK cinema industry at the moment’.

Phil Clapp said: “Although cinemas opened in July and have been able to deliver a safe and enjoyable experience, without major new titles then we understand we aren't able to get as many people out of the home as we'd like.”
