Holidaymakers have been allowed to travel out of higher-risk areas ever since the first lockdown was imposed in March, but some have been asked to isolate on their return depending on where they travelled to and when.

However, now all those wanting to leave areas where infection rates are high must only travel with people from their household or support bubble, rather than friends or family they don’t live with.

Similarly, those wanting to visit hotels and other guest accommodation within the high-risk area they live must do so only with people in their household or support bubble.

People intending to travel to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are asked to pay particular attention to how the legislation passed by the relevant devolved administration might affect their plans.

And travelling to any part of the UK subject to higher local alert levels than where you live is also forbidden under tier 2 lockdown.

Those travelling by car should be aware that it is difficult to socially distance during car journeys and transmission of coronavirus can occur in this context.

People should therefore avoid travelling with someone from outside your household or your support bubble unless you can practise social distancing.

And anyone intending to use public transport for travel should follow the safer travel guidance on the Government's website.
